If you've never played a heavy board game, start here
The jump from gateway to heavy doesn't have to hurt. Three ramps that work.
Deep without being obscure, cutthroat without being mean, and gorgeous enough to keep newcomers at the table for the full arc.
See the full review →Heavy board games, the four-weight two-hour kind, scare off a lot of people. The box is big, the icons are strange, and that first turn feels like you're drowning. It doesn't have to.
The on-ramp approach
Pick a gateway heavy, not a monster. Everdell sits at weight 3 and plays like a worker placement with a nice-looking tree on top. Good first "serious" game.
Step up to Ark Nova when the group wants a longer puzzle. The teach is 25 minutes but the game runs itself after turn three.
Then jump to Brass: Birmingham. Everyone's first game is messy. Everyone's second is a revelation.
What NOT to do
Don't skip to a four-weight your first time. Don't pick a game with a 40-page rulebook. Don't start a heavy at 10pm. You'll hate it, blame the game, and sell it the next week.
Our pick
If a patient teacher is in the room, start with Brass: Birmingham. If not, start with Everdell, then Ark Nova, then Brass. Three sessions, big payoff.
