Bridge
The great partnership card game: an auction, a contract and a lifetime of study.
What it is
Contract Bridge plays as two teams of two, North-South against East-West, and it suits anyone willing to treat a card game as a second language. Each player is dealt 13 cards, then the table bids in an auction for the right to name trumps and a number of tricks. After the opening lead, the declarer's partner lays their hand face up and the declarer plays both. Harold Vanderbilt set out the modern scoring in 1925, and people have been studying it ever since.
What we love
- The auction becomes a language partners build together
- The dummy rule has one player running two hands
- Organized play runs from local clubs to world championships
Honest trade-offs
- Bidding systems take real study
- Needs exactly four committed players
- Not a casual pick, which the welcome score reflects
