· OUR TAKE ·

What it is

Monsters march out of the forest toward the castle at the center of a round board, and players trade cards to hit them in the right ring and color before the towers fall. You win or lose together, but the player with the most points earns the title of Master Slayer. Justin De Witt designed it for Fireside Games in 2009. Perfect for families stepping into co-op games, and one player can run it alone.

What we love

  • Card trading gives everyone a reason to talk on every turn
  • The Master Slayer title adds a friendly edge to the teamwork
  • The Second Edition has new art, heavier cards and 49 monsters to slay

Honest trade-offs

  • Monster slaying is cartoonish, but it is the whole game
  • Random monster draws can swing a game hard
  • The first edition says 10 and up, while the Second Edition says 8 and up
