Caylus
Build a castle one worker at a time, and pay the provost to get in the way.
What it is
A medieval worker-placement game that predates most of its genre. You place workers on buildings, build your own for others to use, and race to contribute to the king's castle. The provost token is the clever bit, because buildings past him stay dark for the round and moving him costs you.
What we love
- Moving the provost creates tension every single round
- Your buildings pay out when opponents use them, so you build for the whole table
- No dice and no card luck, so every loss is on you
Honest trade-offs
- The rulebook is dense and the first game feels like homework
- Early turns are mostly about scraping together money, and new players often stall
- Printings come and go, so check stock before you plan a game night
