What it is

A bluffing game about building a medieval city, for groups who enjoy reading each other. Each round players secretly draft a character, and those characters act in numbered order. The Assassin names a role to skip and the Thief names a role to rob, so you are guessing who took what. The game ends after the round in which a city reaches seven districts, or eight with two or three players.

What we love

  • Eight core roles such as King, Bishop, Merchant and Architect each pull you a different way
  • The current edition holds 27 characters, so the mix changes between games
  • Every round starts with a small mind game over who took which card

Honest trade-offs

  • The Assassin and Warlord can wreck your turn or knock down a district
  • Two and three players use special rules where each person runs two characters
  • The expanded character set includes a Witch, which is easy to leave out if you prefer
