Claim
The king is dead, and two players fight for the throne one trick at a time.
What it is
A trick-taking game built for two, which is rare. The first 13 tricks recruit followers: the winner takes the face-up card and the loser takes one blind. The second 13 tricks use those followers to win factions to your side. Hold the majority in three of the five factions and the crown is yours.
What we love
- Each faction bends the rules, as knights beat goblins and dwarves go to the loser of the trick
- The first half works as a draft in disguise
- Card counts decide each faction, and a tie goes to the highest card
Honest trade-offs
- Much of the result sits outside your control, so there is less choice than it seems
- The fantasy setting is fairly generic
- Several sequels share the name, such as Claim 2 and Claim: Kingdoms, so check which box you are buying
