Cosmic Encounter
Every player is an alien who breaks a rule, and the deals get strange fast.
What it is
First published in 1977 and still going in Fantasy Flight's edition, refreshed for its 42nd anniversary in 2018. Each player runs an alien whose power bends a core rule, and you race to plant colonies on five foreign planets. Allies get invited into every encounter, so a fight is also a negotiation. Perfect for a table that likes to argue cheerfully.
What we love
- The current line counts 238 aliens across its expansions and promos.
- Attack and Negotiate cards go down face down, so a sure win can turn into a deal.
- Flare cards give anyone a limited taste of an alien power.
Honest trade-offs
- Powers can be wildly uneven, and that chaos is the point.
- It seats five in the box, and larger groups need expansions.
- Age ratings vary by listing, from 12+ to 14+.
