Crokinole
A Canadian flicking game on a big wooden board, with a 20-point hole in the middle.
What it is
A tabletop flicking game for 2 or 4 players, perfect for anyone who wants a game a grandparent and a ten-year-old can both win. At four it plays as two teams of two, with partners sitting across from each other. You flick discs toward rings worth 5, 10 and 15 points, past eight small posts, and aim for the 20-point hole at the center. The oldest known board was made in Perth County, Ontario, in 1876, and the World Championship still runs in Tavistock each June.
What we love
- Real 2v2 team play at four
- Each round scores only the difference between the sides, so one good round can swing a match
- Simple to explain and hard to master
Honest trade-offs
- A board is about 26 inches across and needs real table and storage space
- Practiced flickers beat newcomers fast
- Few rules, but very little hidden in them: it is all aim and nerve
