Dominant Species
Six kinds of animals fight for the planet as the ice creeps in.
What it is
Set around 90,000 BC, with an ice age on the way. Each player runs one animal class, from mammals to arachnids, and places action pawns to adapt, spread and compete on a growing board of terrain tiles. Most species on a tile scores best, but only the dominant species takes a card. For players who want a long, tense game with no dice.
What we love
- Two ways to lead a tile: most species for points, or dominance for a card.
- Domination cards can be severe, and sometimes you take one just to deny a rival.
- Glaciers spread across the board and pay out for whoever has the most species on them.
Honest trade-offs
- The Ice Age card sits at the bottom of the deck, and the game runs on until a player picks it.
- Two to four hours, and one reviewer says you probably should not play it every week.
- At six players each person gets only three actions a round, which feels cramped.
