Dominion
Build a deck from scratch while your rivals do the same.
What it is
The game that invented the deckbuilder. Everyone starts with the same ten cards, then buys their way to a deck that does something clever and a little nasty. Ten kingdom cards get picked each game, which is why new combos keep turning up years after a first play.
What we love
- Kingdom cards change every game, so replay value is huge
- Plays in half an hour, which makes a best-of-three easy
- Sets up quickly once you have a sleeved, sorted box
Honest trade-offs
- The art is plain. Dominion was a pioneer, not a looker
- Attack cards can feel mean to newer players, so pick your kingdom with the table in mind
- Interaction is light outside of attacks; most of the game is you tuning your own deck
