Dutch Blitz
A Pennsylvania Dutch card scramble where good manners last about four seconds.
What it is
Everyone plays at once, racing to build shared piles from 1 to 10 in each color. Each player has a deck marked with a pump, carriage, plow or pail, and a round ends when someone empties their ten-card Blitz pile and shouts. Werner Muller, a German immigrant who settled in Pennsylvania, created it. Perfect for quick hands and families who do not mind a little shouting.
What we love
- No turns at all, so nobody waits
- Hands last five to ten minutes, which makes one more very easy to agree to
- An expansion pack takes it up to eight players
Honest trade-offs
- The listed time is per hand, and a full game runs until someone reaches 75 points
- Fast hands beat slow ones, so mixed ages may need a handicap
- Reaching for the same pile gets physical, and one reviewer rates the card quality below average
AI summary of player sentiment
Across the tables we polled, players consistently praise the game's approachability and pacing. The most common complaint is the listed time is per hand, and a full game runs until someone reaches 75 points.
