Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy
A 4X space epic that still finishes before midnight.
What it is
The second edition is the one to own. Same tense expand-explore-exploit-exterminate loop, better components, cleaner upgrades. An experienced four-player game fits in about three hours, which we think is still the best wall-clock-to-depth ratio in the 4X space.
What we love
- Round pacing that other 4X games wish they had
- Ship customization is easy to grasp and hard to master
- Finishes in about three hours at four players once everyone knows the rules
Honest trade-offs
- Combat variance can swing the leader board in one bad roll
- Six players stretches the clock, and a first game can run about five hours
- Diplomacy is lighter than Twilight Imperium fans want, with no phase of its own and only at four or more players
AI summary of player sentiment
