El Grande
Bid your way into Spain, one numbered card at a time.
What it is
The 1996 Spiel des Jahres winner, and a pillar of the area control family. Each round you spend a card numbered 1 to 13 to set turn order, then place your Caballeros and use an action card. Scoring comes three times across nine rounds, and a tower called the Castillo holds troops ready to drop into secret regions. There are no dice, so blame your friends.
What we love
- Each numbered card works only once a game, so every bid has a cost.
- The Castillo tower sets up surprise moves when scoring arrives.
- The action cards turned up each turn are the only randomness.
Honest trade-offs
- Players can gang up on the leader, and we expect they will.
- With no luck to hide behind, slow thinkers can stall the table.
