· OUR TAKE ·

What it is

You play mercenaries in a co-op campaign of 95 scenarios, fighting across hex maps with no dice at all. Each turn you pick two cards, using the top of one and the bottom of the other. Rest and you lose a card for the rest of the scenario, so every fight is a race against your own hand. It suits a steady group who will keep meeting for months, as a full campaign can run past 100 hours.

What we love

  • Seventeen classes, many sealed away, play very differently from one another.
  • Losing a scenario still keeps your experience and gold.
  • Stickers and envelopes make your world your own as the campaign goes on.

Honest trade-offs

  • Setup and teardown are long, even for a single session.
  • The learning curve is steep. Jaws of the Lion is a gentler way in.
  • The box is very large and heavy.
