Hearts
Avoid every heart and the Queen of Spades, unless you are brave enough to take them all.
What it is
The classic trick-avoidance game, and a good fit for four people who like a little scheming. Every heart costs a point and the Queen of Spades costs 13, so the low score wins. It needs nothing but a standard deck, and hands run about five minutes. Take every penalty card in one hand and you shoot the moon, which turns the table on its head.
What we love
- Passing three cards on most hands gives you a chance to fix a bad deal, or set a trap
- Shooting the moon means a terrible hand can turn into a great one
- There is no trump suit, so the rules stay simple
Honest trade-offs
- There are no fixed partners, so it will not fill a 2v2 night
- House rules on passing and the moon vary, so agree them first
