What it is

You are a Scottish clan chieftain building a territory one tile at a time. Each round you draw three tiles, scrap one, and secretly price the other two, knowing any rival can buy them. Four random scoring tiles change what matters from game to game. It suits families ready for a step up from Carcassonne, and it won the 2016 Kennerspiel des Jahres.

What we love

  • Hidden pricing is the heart of it: set a tile too low and it walks, set it too high and you pay for it yourself.
  • Trailing players get extra gold in later rounds, so nobody falls out of the race.
  • Tiles must match landscapes but roads need not connect, which keeps placement friendly.

Honest trade-offs

  • Tile details are small and hard to read across a big table.
  • Money gets tight late, just as prices climb.
  • Whisky barrels are the income icon on the tiles. Nothing more than that, but some families will want to know.
