Kingdom Builder
Three settlements a turn, one terrain card, and scoring that changes every game.
What it is
Each turn you place three settlements on the terrain shown on your one card. Four random board sections and three random scoring cards set up each game, and location tiles hand out extra actions. Gold is counted only at the end. It suits families who like a thinky puzzle with short turns, and it won the 2012 Spiel des Jahres.
What we love
- Random boards and scoring cards make each game play out differently.
- Turns move fast, since the decisions rarely get too heavy.
- Location tiles add just enough special powers to reward planning ahead.
Honest trade-offs
- Some players find it dry, and certain scoring card mixes make for a dull game.
- The terrain card you draw decides where you build, which annoys some players.
