· OUR TAKE ·

What it is

You lead a family in Renaissance Italy, sending members to four towers to collect cards for territories, characters, buildings and ventures. Three dice set how strong most of your family is each round. At the end of each period you either support the Church or take an excommunication penalty, whichever hurts less. It suits players who like building a card engine with luck that hits everyone equally.

What we love

  • The dice are shared, so a bad roll is a problem for the whole table.
  • Going second into a tower costs coins, so timing really counts.
  • The Church decision gives each era a neat, awkward choice.

Honest trade-offs

  • At two players, too much of the board is shut off. It shines with four.
  • Every card appears in every game, so replay variety is limited.
  • The mechanisms are familiar, so experienced players may not find much that is new.
