Monopoly
The game everyone owns and nobody finishes.
What it is
Roll, buy, collect rent, repeat. It began as Elizabeth Magie's Landlord's Game in 1904, built to show how land monopolies squeeze tenants, which is a funny origin for the most famous landlord simulator ever. We include it because it belongs on any classics list. As written it can run for hours, so we recommend the printed auction rule that most people skip, plus a timer.
What we love
- Everybody already knows the board, so there is no teaching
- Trading and table talk are the best part, and the game rewards both
- Cheap, easy to find, and the tokens are iconic
Honest trade-offs
- Long. The printed rules can run past three hours
- Elimination means someone sits out and watches for ages
- Luck rules the early game and the leader tends to snowball
