What it is

Around 900 AD, players defend townships in West Francia from outsiders. In each of seven rounds you pick a Paladin card, draft workers from the Tavern and place them on actions such as Fortify, Commission, Attack and Convert. You can drive outsiders off with Strength or win them over with Faith, and your tracks turn into points at the end. It suits players who like long chains of actions and a tight, fixed length.

What we love

  • Choosing a Paladin each round also lets you plan the rounds that follow.
  • Actions and bonuses interlock into very satisfying turns.
  • There are many paths to points, and solo play is included.

Honest trade-offs

  • The rules look dense at first, though they settle quickly once played.
  • Attacking and converting Saracens and Vikings is part of the historical theme, which some families may want to talk through.
