Pit
A 1904 commodities market in a box, complete with shouting.
What it is
The dealer rings a bell to open the market, and everyone trades at once, calling out how many cards they want to swap until someone holds all nine of one commodity and calls a corner. Parker Brothers published it in 1904, inspired by the Chicago Board of Trade. First to 500 points wins. Perfect for loud groups who want a game with no turns at all.
What we love
- No turns, so all eight players are busy at once
- The Bull and Bear cards add a wild card and a penalty to trade away
- Quick to explain, and the rules include a shorter game to 250 points
Honest trade-offs
- It is loud, which is the point, but the neighbors may disagree
- Fewer players means less of the frenzy that makes it work
- Quiet players can get drowned out in the trading
