· OUR TAKE ·

What it is

A game for 1 to 4 people who enjoy a heavy euro with a real city under it. You are wealthy citizens of Prague under Charles IV, funding the bridge, the walls, the university and St. Vitus Cathedral. Each turn you take a tile from a circular crane and use one of its two actions, then the crane turns. The player who impresses the king most wins.

What we love

  • The action crane shifts every turn, so the best move keeps moving.
  • Six main actions cover mines, quarries, the King's Road, upgrades, walls and buildings.
  • Scoring runs through the Hunger Wall, the Cathedral and Charles Bridge.

Honest trade-offs

  • The number of options invites long pauses.
  • Some tracking is fiddly, and one section of the board is hard to read.
  • Packing the 3D pieces away is a chore, and area control is weaker at low player counts.
