· OUR TAKE ·

What it is

A small wooden game for two that rewards a calm head. Sixteen pieces differ in height, color, shape and whether the top is hollow or solid. You place the piece your opponent hands you, then hand one back. Line up four with any shared trait, call Quarto and you win.

What we love

  • All pieces are shared, so nothing on the board is yours or theirs
  • Four traits to watch at once on a tiny 4x4 board
  • An optional rule also counts four matching pieces in a 2x2 square

Honest trade-offs

  • Games can end in a few minutes, which may feel brief
  • Hollow and solid pieces are easy to misread by eye, so you may need to feel them
