· OUR TAKE ·

What it is

Released in 2005 as Railroad Tycoon and renamed in 2009 once the license ran out. Starting in the eastern United States in 1830, you build track, upgrade engines and deliver goods between cities, scoring best on your own links. It is a simplified take on Age of Steam, so it suits people who want a big train game without the cruelty.

What we love

  • Three actions a turn, picked from building, delivering, upgrading, urbanizing and drawing operation cards.
  • An auction for first player opens every turn.
  • The game ends when enough cities run out of goods, so the table controls the clock.

Honest trade-offs

  • Two hours on the box, and we doubt six players will make it shorter.
