· OUR TAKE ·

What it is

Two builders, a 5x5 island and one goal: step onto the third level of a tower. Every turn you move a builder, then build next to it, and a dome on a tower closes that space for good. God power cards bend the rules for each player. It suits parents and older kids, or any two people who like a chess-style scrap that is over in 20 minutes.

What we love

  • The rules take about two minutes to explain, even with the god cards.
  • The raised 3D island looks far friendlier than the sharp abstract duel underneath.
  • Gordon Hamilton, a mathematician, sold a plain white wooden version himself in 2004. Roxley's 2016 edition added the art.

Honest trade-offs

  • It plays up to four, but it is really built for two.
  • Some god powers feel stronger than others, and the number of gods varies by edition.
  • The god cards use Greek myth as flavor for rule changes. There is no ritual in it, and you can play without them.
