· OUR TAKE ·

What it is

Everyone shares up to four building piles that run from 1 to 12, each started with a 1 or a wild Skip-Bo card. You play from your hand, your discards and the top of your stock pile, and the first to empty that stock pile wins. Hazel "Skip" Bowman of Brownfield, Texas began selling the boxed game in 1967. It suits a grandparent's card table and kids who can count to 12.

What we love

  • Your discard piles give you more planning than the game first lets on.
  • Wild Skip-Bo cards rescue a stuck pile.
  • Two to six can play, alone or in partnerships.

Honest trade-offs

  • The draw decides a lot, and a stuck stock pile can sit for a while.
  • Long chains of plays mean others wait through someone's big turn.
