Stratego
Hide your flag, bluff your ranks, and hope your Spy finds the Marshal.
What it is
A two player classic produced since 1946, with roots in the French game L'Attaque. Each side sets up 40 hidden pieces on a 10 by 10 board, including one Flag and six Bombs. You attack to reveal ranks, and you win by capturing the Flag or leaving your rival with nothing to move. A fine family choice for kids who love a secret.
What we love
- Only a Miner can defuse a Bomb, and a Spy beats the Marshal only when it strikes first.
- Scouts race any distance in a straight line.
- Setup is a puzzle of its own, with 40 pieces placed before the first move.
Honest trade-offs
- We think a first game is mostly guessing.
- There is far less strategy here than in the rest of this list.
- Length swings from 10 minutes to an hour and a half.
