What it is

A fantasy arena game with the feel of chess, for players who enjoy spotting patterns. You place pieces on a 9x9 grid, and when they match the shape on one of your cards you summon that being and use its power. There are four decks, and each plays differently. High Form scores tasks, Deathmatch scores kills, and it also works as a team game.

What we love

  • Every turn gives two actions, so setting up and striking can happen together
  • Patterns can be rotated or inverted, so one card can be met in several ways
  • Flare cards give a player who has fallen behind a way back in

Honest trade-offs

  • Flare cards mean stopping to count pieces, which slows an otherwise quick game
  • You will destroy each other's pieces and plans, and not everyone enjoys that
  • The publisher lists 30 minutes, but some retail listings run to 60, so allow extra time
