Terra Mystica
Reshape the land into your home terrain before the neighbours get there.
What it is
Each of the 14 fantasy factions can build on only one terrain type, so you spend the game converting the map to suit yourself. There are no dice and very little luck, just six rounds of tight choices. Building next to rivals hands them power, which makes a good neighbour a mixed blessing. It suits players who like a long, low-luck puzzle with a real fight for space.
What we love
- Fourteen factions, each with its own terrain and abilities, give it a long life.
- Power moves through three bowls, a small system with a lot of tension in it.
- Random setups present a fresh challenge each time.
Honest trade-offs
- The learning curve is steep, and it is a poor fit for mixed-skill groups.
- The early rounds can settle the outcome.
- Factions include Witches, Cultists and Chaos Magicians, and players climb four elemental cult tracks. It is abstract scoring, not ritual, but some families will want to know.
