War of the Ring: Second Edition
The whole of The Lord of the Rings on one table, with a long afternoon to match.
What it is
One player commands the Shadow Armies, trying to conquer Middle-earth or corrupt the Ringbearer. The other leads the Free Peoples, buying time for the Fellowship to reach Mount Doom. Action dice set what you can do each turn, and the hunt for the hidden Fellowship makes every step towards Mordor a gamble. It suits Tolkien fans with time to spare and one willing friend.
What we love
- The Fellowship moves in secret, which gives the game its best tension.
- Two very different roads to victory mean a battle lost need not be the war lost.
- Reach 12 corruption and the Shadow wins at once, so the Ring is always a risk.
Honest trade-offs
- It is very long, and setup is heavy.
- Dice, cards and hunt draws add a lot of randomness.
- Rules for three and four exist, but reviewers prefer it as a two-player duel.
