Our review

A serious campaign for two players who plan to stick with it. Set during the Battle of Stalingrad, it runs through up to 15 branching scenarios. Decks change for good as soldiers are lost and heroes earn upgrades, and map tiles are swapped out as the city takes damage. A Withdraw option lets you give up a battle to protect your deck.

What works

  • Soldiers lost stay lost, so each scenario changes the deck you bring to the next
  • City tiles are swapped for damaged ones, so the map gets worse as the campaign goes on
  • Branching scenarios mean your war may not match anyone else's

Worth knowing

  • Decks and maps change for good, so the campaign asks for one steady opponent
  • Each scenario follows from the last, so there is no one-off game for a spare evening
  • It is set in one of the war's worst battles, so it will not suit every table
